Penn State made an intriguing decision on Tuesday evening, according to many sources. It affects their coaching staff going forward under head coach James Franklin.

A former star quarterback will join the offensive staff for the Nittany Lions this offseason.

Trace McSorley joins Penn State staff

According to On3, former Nittany Lions QB Trace McSorely is Penn State's newest assistant quarterbacks coach.

The former PSU QB and overall fan favorite has not officially retired from the NFL, but that could happen in time. McSorley has spent the past couple of season as a backup option on practice squads around the league.

He hasn't seen game action since 2022, and now, he could play a legitimate role in the development of the current QBs for the Nittany Lions, instead.

But, he is now joining Franklin’s staff ahead of a 2025 season that sees the Lions as a top five team, and No. 1 in some early media polls, and can help Andy Kotelnicki, Danny O’Brien, and Franklin in the quarterbacks room, among other tasks.

It will be intriguing to watch McSorley's potential coaching experience evolve. With Penn State, it would not be shocking to see him get elevated in the future.

This move by Franklin is the latest of a long list of staff adjustments since the College Football Playoff concluded. The biggest of which was hiring former Ohio State DC Jim Knowles to the same position.
