Outside of a surprising announcement this week that rising junior cornerback Rickey Gibson III plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal later this spring (more on that here), the Tennessee Vols mostly avoided any winter portal drama.
Tennessee lost a few players to the transfer portal, but they didn't lose any key starters (at least so far).
On Wednesday, ESPN's Max Olson pointed out the "key player" that each preseason top 25 program kept out of the portal.
Olson went with rising sophomore defensive back Boo Carter as his choice for the Volunteers (rising sophomore wide receiver Mike Matthews also would've been a solid choice).
Carter is expected to see some time on offense for Tennessee in 2025.
From ESPN: Carter would've received a ton of interest in the transfer portal following his true freshman season, but the Vols were able to get him re-signed for 2025. The former ESPN 300 recruit earned five starts late in the season and put up 38 tackles, three TFLs and an interception. He made a real impact on special teams, too, in averaging 16.5 yards per punt return. Will Josh Heupel and his coaches give Carter a chance to play snaps on offense? If so, he could emerge as a dynamic two-way playmaker for the Vols in 2025.
Carter is an elite talent who is absolutely electric on the field. Keeping him in Knoxville was a must for the Vols this offseason.
The former four-star recruit made a big impact as a true freshman for Tennessee, playing important snaps at safety throughout the season.
It's unclear how much action Carter will see on the offensive side of the ball for the Vols in 2025, but he'll provide Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel and offensive coordinator Joey Halzle with another dynamic option in the passing game.
Vols edge rusher James Pearce says a huge ‘revenge game’ was his favorite moment during his time at Tennessee
That was definitely a fun one for Vols fans
