It was an important coup for the Oklahoma Sooners to be able to lure longtime NFL executive and Senior Bowl Director Jim Nagy to serve as the program's general manager. Nagy will oversee roster management for the Sooners moving forward.
What called Nagy to leave a job as prestigious as the Senior Bowl to come and work for the Sooners in an entirely new role? In his words: the culture of the Sooners.
In a recent video produced by the Sooners, Nagy repeatedly gushed about the people he had met, not just with the university, but throughout the state and how welcomed he and his family felt.
At one specific part, he was asked specifically about what felt different about the Oklahoma program, and he called on his NFL tenure to give a pretty important and humble answer.
"I would say, for one, good people. Good, good people. When you get to the upper levels, whether it's companies or teams, guys kinda lose touch with where they came from. You don't get that sense at all here, whether it's [athletic director] Joe Castiglione, Randall Stephenson, President Joe Harroz, there's great people here. Everyone's committed to it, there's full buy-in from everyone. They want to get back to winning championships here and that's really important. At this school, you should be competing for SEC championships and College Football Playoff appearances every single year and there's a dedication to it, you can feel it when you get here."
Nagy also commented on the passion that head coach Brent Venables brings and how it's hard to not feel his energy and see his vision for what Oklahoma could be moving forward.
Speaking from experience, having been around the program, he's right. There's a different feel about the Sooners that I've yet to experience at any other school.
Now, it's up to Nagy to help Oklahoma reach those standards in the years to come.
