The Oklahoma Sooners landed in the top 12 for four-star cornerback Ca’ron Williams, the No. 1 cornerback in California and a top-150 national recruit in the 2028 class.
Williams, a 6’0, 180-pound defensive back out of Moreno Valley, California, who plays at Santa Margarita Catholic, trimmed his list to 12 schools. Oklahoma joins LSU, Washington, UCLA, Texas, Cal, Texas A&M, Miami, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Oregon. Williams carries a 90.84 composite rating, making him a top-16 cornerback nationally and the No. 9 player in California. He has the size to compete in the SEC, and his profile suggests he could see the field early in his college career.
USC and UCLA are the 2 teams to beat
Right now, USC and UCLA feel like the frontrunners. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. They are the local schools, and Williams has already taken six visits to USC and two to UCLA. He’s also visited SMU, Arizona, and Arizona State, with a trip to Texas on the calendar.
The Sooners have a lot of catching up to do. Williams hasn’t visited Norman yet, and that needs to change. Oklahoma has to get this kid on campus, and if they can land a game-day visit, that would be a significant step. The Sooners typically do well when recruits experience a game day in Norman. The atmosphere, the history, and the fan base are all selling points, and recruits usually walk away feeling much better about Oklahoma after seeing it firsthand.
OU’s track record of playing true freshmen is a selling point
One of the biggest pitches Oklahoma can make to Williams is early playing time. This program does not hesitate to play true freshmen at cornerback. Last season, true freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory started the entire year and was a bit undersized himself. That precedent should matter to a player like Williams. By 2028, Williams could be a guy who sees significant snaps for Oklahoma if he commits. The opportunity is real, and the coaching staff has proven it with action, not just promises.
That said, there is still a lot of work to do. USC and UCLA hold the early advantage, and Oklahoma hasn’t gotten Williams on campus yet. The good news is that Williams doesn’t seem likely to commit anytime soon. The Sooners have time to make their push, and they need to use every bit of it.
