The Denver Broncos addressed one of their biggest needs of the offseason during the first wave of free agency by signing tight end Evan Engram to a two year deal worth $23 million.
Denver badly needed to add another playmaker for quarterback Bo Nix. And Engram, a player who has been remarkably consistent over the course of his career, is certainly a good fit in Sean Payton's offense.
CBS Sports, however, believes the Broncos could still use another offensive playmaker.
The national sports media outlet listed running back as the Broncos' biggest remaining need after the first wave of free agency.
From CBS Sports: Denver has gone through its offseason wish list and efficiently crossed each off; with the exception of running back. Javonte Williams was signed by Dallas, which leaves Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime to compete. Boise State's Ashton Jeanty or North Carolina's Omarion Hampton could be primary targets for the organization in the first round of next month's draft.
There's no doubt that Denver needs to add a running back to the roster. But instead of looking to the free agent market, I think the Broncos should target a running back in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Specifically, I think Denver should target former Tennessee Vols running back Dylan Sampson on day two of the draft.
Sampson is expected to be drafted somewhere in the round two to round three range. There's a decent chance that he sneaks into the second round. The Broncos could probably land Sampson with the No. 51 overall pick (round two). That might be a bit of a reach, but I don't think he'll still be on the board when the Broncos' next pick rolls around (No. 85 overall).
The Baton Rouge native is a dynamic running back who has plenty of speed (4.42 in the 40-yard dash at Tennessee's Pro Day last week), can catch the ball out of the backfield, has improved in pass protection (though he still has room to improve), and has great off-the-field attributes (Sampson was a key team leader on a College Football Playoff team last season).
Sampson, who has a similar skillset as New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara (who is also a former Vol), is an ideal fit in Payton's offense. If Denver has the opportunity to select Sampson, they should absolutely take it.
