Sean Payton finally stopped the charade and made the change that Broncos fans knew was inevitable
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton put an end to the charade on Wednesday.
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton sent a scare to fantasy football owners in August when he listed rookie running back Jonah Coleman at the bottom of the depth chart.
Coleman had a strong training camp, so it was a surprise for some to see Coleman not higher on the depth chart at the start of preseason.
But the positioning on the depth chart really had nothing to do with Coleman’s performance — it’s just how Payton operates when it comes to rookies.
“I’m not ready for a depth chart, but I have to get a depth chart,” said Payton during the 2024 preseason. “It’s easy to push the underlined players [rookies] to the back of the line and then make sure it’s kind of where we sit right now. That’s really it. No, it’s a good question but I’m not trying to send messages at all.”
On Wednesday, the Broncos’ updated depth chart was revealed and Coleman has moved up to No. 3, which was expected all along.
We all knew this is where Coleman would be when the season started, which just further proves that fans and media shouldn’t pay too much attention to depth charts in August — they don’t mean much at the end of the day.
