It has been a fascinating career so far for former LSU All-American left tackle Will Campbell. He played his high school football at Neville in Monroe, Louisiana, eventually becoming a consensus top 100 recruit in the 2022 recruiting class. Despite an offer list consisting of the who’s who of prominent college programs, Campbell opted to stick in-state with the Tigers.
The rest is history. After a rough first start against Florida State and defensive end Jared Verse, Campbell has mostly been stellar the last three seasons. That includes having been named a Freshman All-American in 2022, and a true All-American each of the last two seasons. That storied career has made Campbell arguably the top offensive lineman in the 2025 NFL Draft class.
Like any great player, Campbell has several role models who have helped him mold his game. At the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, he was asked about those role models. Campbell made three interesting selections, including one that went through similar questions in their process.
“I’m from north Louisiana,” Campbell said to the media. “A guy I always looked up to was Andrew Whitworth. He’s from the same area as me and played at LSU. Any offensive lineman out of the 318, that’s the guy you look up to. Cam Robinson, other guys of that stature. Whenever I was in high school, another guy that I looked up to that was in college at the time was Penei Sewell.”
Whitworth was an obvious choice for Campbell. A former LSU star himself, Whitworth had an outstanding 16-year career for the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams. He was selected to four Pro Bowls, two All-Pro teams, and won a Super Bowl with the Rams. It was a tremendous career for the former Tigers standout.
Robinson was a unique choice considering he played for Alabama, especially knowing the rivalry between them and LSU. Considering Robinson is also from Monroe, that attraction makes sense. While Robinson’s career hasn’t quite lived up to expectations since being a second rounder in the 2017 NFL Draft, he has still started 101 games in his eight-year career so far.
The most unique inclusion was Sewell, who was the No. 7 overall selection by the Detroit Lions in the 2021 NFL Draft. In four seasons, Sewell has been selected to three Pro Bowls and named All-Pro twice. He is already considered one of the very best offensive lineman in the NFL.
Like Campbell, some had questions about Sewell’s long term outlook positionally considering he had just 33 ¼ inch arms. If you watched his film at Oregon, you should have never had those concerns, but that’s a conversation for a different day. Campbell is more justified in those questions surrounding him, but it will be interesting to see if he can answer them swiftly on the next level.
