Rams show Chiefs the going rate for starting left tackle in 2025 free agency by locking up one of the NFL's top pending free agents

The Kansas City Chiefs just received good and bad news as they search for a potential solution at the left tackle position.
The good news is they know the going rate for a free agent left tackle in the 2025 class of free agents, and it's not break-the-bank crazy. The bad news is that perhaps the top player available at the position is now off the market as a result.
That's all thanks to the Los Angeles Rams, who, after agreeing to a reworked contract with Matthew Stafford, have made another move to lock up one of their own pending free agents.
Rams agree to three-year extension with LT Alaric Jackson
On Friday, the Rams agreed to a three-year contract extension with pending free agent left tackle Alaric Jackson as first reported by FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz. He signed a three-year deal worth $57M, including $35M in guaranteed money. That comes out to an average of $19M per year.
At 26 years old, Jackson was the market's youngest and most promising left tackle. The best remaining players at the position are pretty bleak, with Ravens LT Ronnie Stanley, Vikings LT Cam Robinson, Steelers LT Dan Moore, and Jets LT Tyron Smith headlining the bunch. Each of them has their blemishes, be it health, on-field success, or age.
This might explain why the Chiefs were willing to use the franchise tag on Trey Smith. They might have already resigned themselves to the fact that they're unlikely to find a solution to their left tackle woes on the 2025 free agent market. That would mean they'd likely have to turn their attention to figuring things out in the 2025 NFL draft, which presents its own set of problems based on where the Chiefs are slated to pick in the first round. Brett Veach certainly has his work cut out for him.
