Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings could be in line for a big pay raise thanks in part to some major NFL news over the weekend.

Jennings, who just wrapped up his fifth season with the San Fransisco 49ers, is poised to enter the 2025 season as one of the team's top options at wide receiver.

The former Vol has less competition for targets in the passing game with the 49ers' decision to trade Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders on Saturday.

Jennings had a breakout season for the 49ers in 2024, catching 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns while seeing extended playing time due to San Francisco wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk missing most of the season.

The former Vols wide receiver signed a two-year extension (worth $15.4 million) with the 49ers before the start of the 2024 season.

With Samuel no longer in San Francisco, and Jennings entering the final year of his contract, there's a decent chance that the 49ers work out another extension with the Tennessee native.

The 49ers clearly love Jennings. And they learned last season that he can be much more than just a blocking receiver that moves the chains on third down (third-and-Jauan is an elite nickname, though).

Jennings isn't a classic burner who beats defensive backs with speed. He's a gritty player who can run good routes and out-effort defenders. Jennings isn't afraid of contact — he's going to do everything in his power to make the play when the ball comes his way.

It would be interesting to see what kind of market Jennings would have if he entered free agency after the 2025 season. The 49ers, however, would be wise to prevent that from ever happening.

Jennings will turn 28 in July, so he's still got some youth on his side. San Francisco should reward the former Vol this offseason with a three-year or four-year extension, covering the next several seasons of Jennings' "prime years".

Every team could use a player like Jennings. There's zero reason for the 49ers to let him walk after the 2025 season. And if Jennings has another big year for the 49ers in 2025, he'll be even more expensive to extend next offseason.

This feels like a no-brainer for the 49ers. After all, no one in the NFL deserves a big pay day more than Jennings.
