According to a report from Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, Broncos defensive end Zach Allen is seeking a lucrative contract extension.
Allen had a breakout season in 2024, setting new career-highs in total tackles with 61 and sacks with 8.5. He also recorded 47 quarterback pressures, one safety, and one pass defensed. He was named a Second-Team All-Pro for his efforts.
Allen has one year remaining on his current contract, in which he is set make close to $13 million. It is common for players to want to secure an extension before they enter the final season of their deal, and the timing couldn't be more perfect for Allen coming off the best year of his career.
Now the question is, are the Broncos willing to give Allen what he wants? Denver is in solid shape with its approximant salary cap number of $41 million, but have needs elsewhere on its roster, particularly on offense.
If Allen received his goal of $25 million per year, that would make him the third-highest paid defensive lineman in the NFL behind the Kansas City Chiefs' Chris Jones and Christian Wilkins of the Las Vegas Raiders. The Broncos have recently given contract extensions to players such as cornerback Patrick Surtain II, offensive guard Quinn Meinerz, offensive tackle Garett Bolles, and linebacker Jonathon Cooper.
Allen entered the league as a third-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019. He battled through injuries during the first two years of his career before finding his footing. Allen signed with the Broncos in 2023 and had a solid season with 60 total tackles and five sacks.
He has spent his entire career in defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's system, dating back to their days together in Arizona. Allen is still in the prime of his career at 27-years-old and should give a good return should Denver decide to invest in him long-term.
The Denver Broncos have placed tenders on a pair of promising young players ahead of free agency
A logical move to make.
