A few weeks after the hire of longtime NFL and Senior Bowl executive Jim Nagy as general manager of the Oklahoma Sooners was announced, Nagy has begun to settle down and begin his work in preparing to oversee all football duties.
His long tenure in the NFL has given Nagy plenty of connections and relationships he has built across the scouting world in both college and the NFL.
Those connections will help him build out a diverse and talented front-office scouting department that will help the Sooners identify and develop talent. That unique experience and network will be a boon in bringing in the right people on staff that fit the culture and values of the Oklahoma Sooners.
However, it's not just the Sooners who will be able to take advantage of this. Nagy also proclaimed that he would use his network to help recruits take that next step of their careers into the NFL.
"I think, just helping these guys down that path. You know, there's so many curves in the road on the way to the NFL and letting these guys know just what these NFL guys are looking for and what they value. When it comes time to them [OU players] being draft-eligible, just really reaching out to those contacts and telling them about what these guys have done here in this building. Having that trust factor, they're gonna trust what I tell them. I've got a lot of friends in that league and if these guys come in here and do things the right way, I'm gonna be their biggest champion."
That's a pretty massive step forward as far as prospects go. To have the endorsement of a guy as connected and respected as Jim Nagy would speak volumes about the player and almost certainly would be a valuable part of an evaluation for his NFL future.
Players come to Oklahoma to play in the NFL. That's a simple fact. Every person who puts on the Crimson and Cream one day hopes to play at the next level. Now with Jim Nagy making an emphatic statement in support of that goal, Oklahoma's already robust NFL pipeline seems that much bigger.
