Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners could be in the running for a top-15 recruit in the 2028 recruiting class
The Oklahoma Sooners could use a player like Tyzon Swann, who’s interested in the Sooners. But there’s a lot of work that needs to be done.
The Oklahoma Sooners are one of 9 remaining schools in the running for elite 2028 defensive lineman Tyzon Swann, a 6’5, 250-pound prospect ranked the No. 8 overall recruit in the 2028 recruiting class.
Landing Swann would be a massive win for OU’s recruiting efforts, but the Sooners have work to do before they can consider themselves serious contenders for the five-star defensive lineman out of Maryland.
Swann plays at Henry E. Lackey High School in Indian Head, Maryland. He holds a 95.19 composite rating, making him the No. 1 player in Maryland and the No. 1 player at his position. His current list of schools includes Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, UCLA, USC, Alabama, Ohio State, Maryland, and Florida. Penn State also appears to be in the running.
The Sooners have ground to make up
When you look at Swann’s team predictions, Auburn holds the highest chance to land him at 17%, according to Rivals and industry consensus. Auburn has also had the most visits with him at three. Ohio State and Florida have each hosted him twice. Oklahoma has not visited with him yet, which puts the Sooners at a clear disadvantage.
However, Sooners fans know how Brent Venables operates. Once he gets recruits on campus, that’s when things tend to shift in Oklahoma’s favor. The Sooners are good at showing prospects what they could become at OU. They lean heavily on the program’s history, and Venables has a track record of making recruits feel like family. That personal connection is what it’s all about in recruiting.
Swann’s skill set fits perfectly in the SEC
Swann is a guy who can do it all on the interior of the defensive line. He’s dynamic and versatile with impressive burst and vertical disruption. He can knife between blockers and terrorize offensive game plans. He’s also a two-sport athlete and an all-county basketball player, which speaks to his overall athleticism.
His ability to affect the game across multiple techniques along the defensive front makes him a menace for opposing offensive coordinators. He carries high upside with a projectable frame and build, and he’s made to play in the SEC at a place like Oklahoma.
Where OU’s 2028 class stands
Oklahoma currently holds a top-10 2027 recruiting class, but the 2028 class is still in its early stages. The Sooners have just one commitment so far in quarterback Trey Tagovailoa. Getting a player like Swann would help get the ball rolling for the rest of that class.
It’s obvious Swann is leaning in a different direction right now, but that doesn’t mean the Sooners can’t put in the work and land him. The 2028 recruiting class doesn’t have to be signed until February 2028, and that’s still quite a ways away. Oklahoma should be trying to set up visits with him as soon as possible. Once they get him on campus, the Sooners are only going to move him up their list of favorite schools.
