Things didn't go as planned for Kansas City's offense in 2024.
The Chiefs were poised to have a revamped passing attack when they added Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy to their wide receiver corps that already featured Rashee Rice, who had a breakout season as a rookie in 2023.
Those who attended training camp got a glimpse of the trio together, but unfortunately the three never took the field at the same time during a game. Brown injured his shoulder during the first offensive play of the preseason, costing him the first 15 games of the regular season.
After that came a freak accident in Week 4 when quarterback Patrick Mahomes accidently hit Rice in the knee while trying to tackle (now Chiefs cornerback) Kristian Fulton following an interception. Rice tore his LCL and missed the remainder of the year. Kansas City brough in veteran WRs JuJu-Smith-Schuster and DeAndre Hopkins to fill the voids left by Brown and Rice.
The Chiefs' offense got by well enough to make it back to another Super Bowl, but more often than not it lacked explosiveness and playmaking ability. Thankfully, that is all now in the past, and K.C. is going to try again in 2025 to execute the vision it had for the passing attack in 2024.
That started with re-signing Brown to another one-year contract a couple of weeks ago. Brown spoke to the media on Thursday and had this to say when he was asked what he thinks the trio of himself, Worthy, and Rice can accomplish if they can all stay healthy in 2025:
"Those are my guys, the sky's the limit," Brown said. "We talk all the time about history and the team we're on. The team, history, our history as a group, our history as individual players. And that stuff we speak on, we're striving for through the offseason. Through our training, we're trying to push each other to be the best, because ultimately, I do feel like we could do something that's never been done before."
It is important to note that Rice has a suspension looming, so there will be another chunk of time when the trio will not be able to play together. However, once the suspension runs it course, they will be able to hit the ground running. The key then will be to stay healthy and build chemistry together on the field. If they can, the Chiefs' passing game will have a great balance of deep threat and yards after the catch ability.
