Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid gave an update on Mia Bieniemy following training camp on Wednesday. He also spoke about Eric Bieniemy’s eventual return to training camp.
Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid provided an update on the status of OC Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia Bieniemy, on Wednesday, July 29. Mia was transported to the hospital with “serious injuries” earlier this week after she was allegedly shot multiple times by the couple’s 27-year-old son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy.
“Update on Mia (Bieniemy): She’s doing great,” Reid said. “She’s doing better and great from where she was. Out of the ICU unit and making progress, so we’re happy about that.”
NBC shared new details on Tuesday night, including doorbell camera video of the police response to the shooting. Mia reportedly called police herself after being shot multiple times with a .22-caliber weapon. Police are seen carrying Mia from the couple’s Virginia home as others with rifles drawn descended upon the home.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy is being held by police without bond. He was arrested by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and charged with three felonies after the incident.
Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy has no established return timeline as training camp continues
Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy departed St. Joseph, Missouri, to return to Virginia to be with his wife and other son, Eric Bieniemy III.
“EB’s still with her,” Reid said. “And that part’s important, that that’s taking place.”
Chiefs assistant coaches Joe Bleymaier and Andy Heck have assumed Bieniemy’s role as offensive coordinator for the time being. Coach Reid told reporters that there’s no timeline for Bieniemy’s return to training camp.
“Eric’s a big part of this,” Reid said. “We love having him here, but it’s important that he takes care of business and everybody knows that. Eric will be back soon enough to jump in there and do his thing, but he’s got to take care of that first.”
Asked whether he’d prefer Coach Bieniemy back sooner than later, Reid recognizes that the most important thing is ensuring that the family is taken care of.
“I just want to make sure she’s taken care of, and Eric Jr., too,” Reid said. “So, that and he’s got the other part of that that he’s got to sort out. So, let him take care of that. We stay in touch with him and keep him abreast of everything that’s going on. He’s got the tape he can watch in his whatever spare time he’s got there.”
