There's been plenty of speculation that the New England Patriots could trade former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton this offseason.
Milton, a sixth round selection by the Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, became a potential trade chip for New England thanks to his performance in the final game of the 2024 regular season.
The former Tennessee quarterback passed for 241 yards while accounting for two touchdowns in the Patriots' win against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18.
Last week, the Patriots signed veteran journeyman quarterback Josh Dobbs, who is also a former Tennessee standout, to serve as a backup to starting quarterback Drake Maye.
The addition of Dobbs to the roster only served to increase speculation that Milton could be dealt by the Patriots this offseason.
There's a "growing sentiment" that the New England Patriots are entertaining trade offers for Joe Milton
According to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin, there's a "growing sentiment" that New England is entertaining trade offers for Milton.
"Per sources, there is growing sentiment that the Patriots are entertaining trade offers for Milton, their intriguing backup quarterback," wrote Volin this week. "In an offseason light on free agent quarterbacks and top draft prospects, Milton, the Patriots’ sixth-round pick last year, is basically a lottery ticket."
Volin suggested that it's only "worth it" for the Patriots to trade Milton if they can get a day two pick (round two or round three) in return (which lines up with what Cleveland Browns insider Tony Grossi reported earlier this week as far as New England's expected asking price for Milton).
Milton is undoubtedly talented, but he has only one NFL start under his belt. NFL teams might be hesitant to send a third round pick to New England for a sixth round draft pick with one career start.
But all it takes is one team to make the right offer. It'll be interesting to see how the Milton trade saga plays out this spring/summer. It's certainly possible that the former Vol could be wearing a new uniform this fall.
