While the Pittsburgh Steelers remain in wait-and-see mode regarding Aaron Rodgers, the NFL Draft waits for no one.
In a matter of weeks, the Steelers will be on the clock with or without Aaron Rodgers on their roster.
That will likely dictate the direction they go in round one, with Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network naming one position in particular should Rodgers end up in Pittsburgh…
Steelers to target WR in R1 if they sign Aaron Rodgers?
"I just feel like if the Aaron Rodgers thing gets done, which everybody's kind of expecting that it does get done, I think they try and get another player to try and help him on that side of the ball, said Jeremiah on the Up and Adams show with Kay Adams. "I think to me, you're looking at another weapon, whether that's Emeka Egbuka, someone like that. We'll see if [Tetairoa] McMillan's still there from Arizona…
"…I would think if you're gonna make that commitment and kind of go out on that ledge and do the Aaron Rodgers thing…man you gotta get someone that's gonna make that decision look smart."
It's interesting to suggest a WR only because of the fact that George Pickens is still on the team, and barring him going back on his word, Omar Khan intends to keep him on the roster.
But, Pickens is headed into the final year of his contract, and finding his replacement could be done sooner rather than later should the Steelers let him walk. Emeka Egbuka would be the ideal player, as he can fit the Z role as a Hines Ward clone alongside the vertical explosive player that is DK Metcalf.
And honestly, even if Aaron Rodgers doesn't sign and the Steelers brass have made up their minds on George Pickens' future, a WR would probably be a better target than a QB, even if that is the position getting all of the hype right now in Pittsburgh.
“I was of the mind that Pittsburgh was not taking a quarterback in Round 1,” Adam Schefter said on his podcast. “I think the only quarterback that they would consider, me reading between the lines, would be Shedeur. But I can’t imagine he’s gonna slide to 21. Would Pittsburgh be willing to trade up to a certain point to go get Shedeur Sanders, if he gets past those other spots? If the Browns don’t take Shedeur Sanders at two, and if the Giants don’t take Shedeur Sanders at three, and that is the feel that I’m getting recently, where is Shedeur Sanders going."
So it all hinges on Rodgers, who, if he doesn't make his decision soon, could have to live with the consequences of watching the lone team who wants him, draft a rookie QB in round one.
