Day 2 of Pittsburgh Steelers training camp in Latrobe has officially wrapped up, and while it was another unpadded practice with high tempo, the real story belonged to the quarterbacks and cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.

Aaron Rodgers 2025 stats

  • 3,322 passing yards.
  • 24 touchdowns.
  • 7 interceptions.

Aaron Rodgers is already humming

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers remains on limited reps until Monday when the Steelers put on the pads, playing about 40 to 50% of the snaps per coach Mike McCarthy. That didn’t stop him from being extremely sharp on Tuesday. Rodgers fired multiple power throws to wide receiver Muth up the seam and connected with wide receiver DK Metcalf down the sideline over cornerback Jamel Dean. He followed that up later to end practice with a ball that traveled nearly 50 yards in the air to wide receiver Roman Wilson, falling incomplete only because Wilson laid out and couldn’t haul it in.

Then came the red zone, where Rodgers delivered an amazing throw to Metcalf, who went up and mossed Steelers rookie corner Daylen Everette.

Rodgers was on fire across these first two days. If they resemble anything close to what the regular season is going to look like, the Pittsburgh offense is going to be humming.

Will Howard and Drew Allar flash different styles

Some of the younger quarterbacks told different stories on day 2. Quarterback Will Howard had an up-and-down session. He completed four passes in a row at one point during the red zone drill, and had a great ball to Roman Wilson. Then Howard threw a bad interception over the middle. Howard got hesitant at the top of his drop, forced an errant throw, and safety Sebastian Castro took it home.

As for quarterback Drew Allar, there were no jaw-dropping wow throws, no moments where the arm talent or athleticism jumped off the field. But he was comfortable. He delivered. He stepped in and made all the throws he needed to make. For a rookie in his first training camp with McCarthy, that’s all you can ask for.

Skill position standouts and depth chart movement

Wide receiver Brandon Smith, who had an outstanding day 1, opened with the second group of receivers on day 2. He’s already working his way up the depth chart.

Safety DeShon Elliott, after watching most of day 1, was on the Steelers’ starting defense next to safety Jaquan Brisker. That’s a good sign for his health and his potential return. Rookie Robert Spears-Jennings, the seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma, got some first-team reps. And Wilson continues to have a strong start to camp, making plays all over the field.

Asante Samuel Jr. continues to shine

After a strong day one in a starting role with Joey Porter Jr. sidelined due to a “tight back,” and Jalen Ramsey remaining on PUP, Samuel Jr. has made the most of his opportunities. He had a huge pass breakup in team drills, and has been mentioned both of the first two days.

Injury updates remain unchanged

On the injury front, there is nothing new to report. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey is still absent, cornerback Joey Porter Jr. continues to deal with a back issue, and cornerback Donte Kent remains out.

The Steelers have two more practices tomorrow and Saturday before the pads come on Monday, and the A to Z Sports team will be there live and in person when they do.
