The Oklahoma Sooners had a terrible offense in 2024, which is not the norm from what we have seen from this football program over the last 10 years or so. Instead of an elite offense with a bad defense, it was quite literally flipped.

In order to get that to where it should be, on the offensive side, the Sooners have had to pretty much strip and restart everything. They fired their offensive coordinator and hired a new one. Their former starting quarterback transferred to a new school in the SEC, and the new coordinator brought his quarterback with him.

They hit the portal hard for depth pieces on the offensive line and new wide receivers. Some of those new receivers have been making some noise, too, in spring camp. And of course, the Sooners recruited hard on that side of the ball, but that was even before they knew the offense would be bad in 2024.

One of the positions they did recruit well, and still continue to do so, is the running back position. It helps when your running backs coach is DeMarco Murray, a former NFL running back for the Tennessee Titans, Dallas Cowboys, and Philadelphia Eagles. So, he knows what he's doing.

One of the running backs he has recruited is bound to turn heads, even as a freshman.

"He's one of the most dynamic and explosive RBs in the country … He's a home run hitter and he didn't flinch," Venables said during National Signing Day regarding freshman RB Tory Blaylock. "He's been committed for a long time."

Tory Blaylock is a running back from Atascocita High School in Humble, Texas, born into a football family. His dad, Derrick Blaylock, was an NFL running back for seven years with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, so that certainly helps, too. A four-star recruit in the 2025 class, Tory committed to the University of Oklahoma in March 2024, choosing it over schools like Ohio State, Texas, and Alabama.

At 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Blaylock is fast and has great size. In his 2023 junior year, he ran for 616 yards and 11 touchdowns while adding 268 receiving yards and three scores. His 2024 senior season was even better, with 1,262 rushing yards at 9.6 yards per carry and 26 touchdowns, plus 304 receiving yards and three more scores.

We saw last season, several young running backs got their fair share of carries, and most of the time, they made something of it. We could see that from Blaylock in 2025, for all we know.
