In the 2024 NFL Draft, there was plenty of split decisions about former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, particularly with his profile with the Ducks being a quarterback that threw a ton of short passes and screens. There were plenty of people that doubted whether or not he could push the ball down the field.

Clearly the Broncos disagreed, and after a very strong rookie season that saw Denver return to the playoffs, it's clear that they have something in Nix worth building around. The free agency decision by former 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw shows that what Sean Payton is building in Denver, with Nix at the middle of it, is something worth paying attention to.

Last season, the Broncos were clearly ahead of schedule. Whenever you take a rookie quarterback in the first round, you're looking for building blocks. You aren't expecting to immediately compete in the playoffs. Just getting there was a great first step after finishing 8-9 the year prior.

According to a recent report, the 49ers were very aggressively pursuing a reunion with their linebacker Greenlaw, with GM John Lynch and HC Kyle Shanahan going so far as to visit him at his home in Texas with a new offer aimed at beating what Greenlaw verbally had in place with the Broncos.

It wasn't enough. Greenlaw decided to stick with the Broncos going forward, which is a huge testament to what Denver is building.

Greenlaw is coming off a season in which he played only two games, but he 120+ tackles in each of the two seasons prior. He's a difference maker that gives Denver a true centerpeice on defense.

Denver obviously has a tall task in front of them to compete. In the AFC West alone, they have to contend with the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as a rebooted Los Angeles Chargers team under Jim Harbaugh that is taking big steps forward. The AFC is a gauntlet, with Josh Allen and the Bills, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens, Joe Burrow and the Bengals, and the aforementioned Chiefs looking like four of the five best teams in the NFL. The Broncos can't control their competition, but they can control what they build. It certainly looks like they're trending in the right direction.
