The Lady Vols are heading to the Sweet 16 thanks to their 82-67 win against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus on Sunday evening.
Tennessee will be making its 37th all-time appearance in the Sweet 16, which is the most ever by a program.
With Tennessee advancing past the second round of the NCAA Tournament, it means that the Lady Vols will be able to cash in a promise that head coach Kim Caldwell made.
Caldwell told reporters after the game that "at some point in time" she told her players that they could wear whatever shoes they want if Tennessee reached the Sweet 16.
The first year Lady Vols head coach also noted that her players reminded her of that promise before the clock hit zero on Sunday.
"I’m happy to see how excited they are," said Caldwell about her players after the win against Ohio State. "I guess at some point in time, I told them if we make it to the Sweet 16, they can wear whatever shoes they want. And they remembered that. They were telling me that when there was still time on the clock. So just to see how excited they are and see what it means to them is nice."
I don't know how much the shoe promise served as motivation for Tennessee, but either way, the Lady Vols will get to show some personality by wearing "whatever shoes they want" now that the UT is heading to the Sweet 16.
