The pre-draft process for star Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe hasn't been overly strong thus far. While he ran well at the Alabama pro day and his hands somehow grew half an inch between the Senior Bowl and the Scouting Combine, Milroe's struggles winning over evaluators since the end of the regular season have tanked his momentum as a potential first-round pick.
Still, with one month remaining before the start of the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Milroe can't stop grinding and working to improve his consistency. A rocky 2024 season aside, he remains an incredibly gifted athlete who teams will want to develop.
While he might go off the board a little later than we thought a year ago, Milroe has long-term potential worth investing in. Recently, I ranked Milroe as the seventh-most accurate passer in the class.
Here's my breakdown of Milroe's accuracy, with a tidbit at the end about how to get the most out of the explosive passer.
"If someone could guarantee that Jalen Milroe was in his best element 100 percent of the time, he'd be a slam-dunk first-round pick.
His maligned accuracy issues are sporadic but were also exacerbated in 2024 when he was playing in a vertical passing offense that increased his pure dropbacks and average depth of target. Jaxson Dart and Kurtis Rourke were the only two draftable quarterbacks with a higher average target depth than Milroe.
Milroe won't consistently lead receivers or even throw a catchable pass as a standstill pocket quarterback. However, he makes up for this weakness with jaw-dropping precision and pure arm strength while on the move and when throwing into contested windows. His game seems to elevate when the challenge is higher, and his best throws are on par with anyone in the 2025 class.
Getting Milroe into a play-action-heavy offense that mixes in rollouts and deep shots is ideal. His completion rate skyrockets by 15 percent on play-action attempts, and his turnover-worthy throws plummet when he throws downfield more. He's a unique prospect with the most room to grow into an immense ceiling."
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer often had Milroe prioritizing shorter passes over easier half-field reads that generated chunk plays. While this can benefit Milroe's development, it caused some growing pains throughout the year.
Milroe saw his raw accuracy dip 1.5%, and he threw seven fewer touchdowns and five more interceptions than his breakout 2023 season. Some of this was likely due to the scheme change, defenses adjusting to Milroe, and a weakened supporting cast.
Getting Milroe into another West Coast offense like what Tommy Rees used in 2023 can be the quickest pathway to efficient playmaking and production at the next level. We hope Milroe lands somewhere patient, just as Jalen Hurts did.
If he does, then Milroe can still become the franchise signal-caller he once seemed almost destined to become at one point.
