It turns out the Dallas Cowboys got a better deal on recently traded-for quarterback Joe Milton than many will realize.
That's not just because they're moving down only 46 spots in the NFL Draft to land the quarterback with three years on his deal but because it turns out there was a better offer on the table for the New England Patriots.
According to FOX's Jordan Schultz, "the Patriots had a better offer for Milton but chose to send him where he wanted out of respect for him." Per the same report, the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers all showed interest.
The news makes sense, too. Milton was dealt a bad hand in New England. He was picked in the sixth round of the same draft in which the Patriots landed Drake Maye. Naturally, Maye was paired with veteran Jacoby Brissett on gameday rosters as NFL coaching staffs will always be hesitant to suit up two rookie quarterbacks. The situation wasn't getting any better, either.
With a new coaching staff in place for the 2025 NFL season, the Patriots brought in Joshua Dobbs and it soon became clear he was going to have a tough time finding his way into the roster. Thus, doing right by Milton was the right thing to do. But that's only one side of the story.
The most significant side of things for fans is obviously going to be the fact that based on Schultz's report, Milton chose the Cowboys. He also told the NFL insider he grew up a fan of the silver and navy.
Beyond his fandom, it's clear the Cowboys give Milton a clean path to becoming the top backup. He will only have to compete with Grier and most importantly, himself. The Tennessee product has the arm, there's no worry about that. The question is he can translate his raw talent into quality and consistent QB play. For now, fans can appreciate he chose Dallas as his preferred destination.
