A team that still believes they are a QB away from contention, the way the 2024 season ended may have created pause for the Russell Wilson supporters despite the fact that for seven games, he looked like his old self.
Well, some inside Pittsburgh's front office are hopeful that a starter from 2024 returns, but it's not Russell Wilson…
Steelers optimistic that Justin Fields will re-sign in Pittsburgh
“I know there is some internal optimism or some sentiment for Justin Fields as an option as their quarterback moving forward, and that both sides are open to a potential deal,” ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently said on SportsCenter.
The only thing we know for sure, is that only one of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields will be back in 2025. It seems that the majority of the organization would rather go with the 25 year old signal caller that flashed some of the best ball of his career during his six-game stretch with the Steelers, as opposed to the 36-year-old veteran who lost five games staright.
But there are two people that make decisions in Pittsburgh. That would be Mike Tomlin, and Art Rooney. Tomlin is the whole reason that Wilson signed with the Steelers, and Art Rooney reportedly has his favorite between the two.
“The people at the top of the organization that might make the ultimate decisions are No. 3 fans over No. 2 fans,” Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show told 93.7 The Fan. “I heard that maybe Art is more in favor of Russ than maybe the rest. Now who has last call on this? I don’t know. I don’t think Art would stick his nose in and say, ‘We are taking Russ and forget about it, but I think that they made it crystal clear, at least Art did, to me, and I do believe him on this one. They wanna bring one of them back and I think it’s going to depend on which option they have.”
So it seems that there is an internal tug of war going on in Pittsburgh. The majority of the staff wants Justin Fields back, but if the top two decision-makers want Russell Wilson, you can expect him to be back.
