It took a late game-winner from Bruce Thornton, but the Buckeyes protected home court on Thursday night against No. 18 Maryland with a 73-70 win.
The Buckeyes moved to 14-9 with the win and helped their postseason chances with another victory over a quality team. Thornton drilled a three-pointer with less than eight seconds to go and that was the difference. Ohio State’s top player finished with a game-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting and 7-of-8 from the charity strike.
After the win, Buckeyes head coach Jake Diebler revealed that the team is playing the exact way you want to hear 25 games into the season.
“This group is connected,” Diebler said following the 73-70 victory. “I don’t mean for that to sound cliche, and it may be hard to see something tangible like that sometimes, but it really is about the toughness and how connected we are. We’re playing with better attention to detail and we’re playing with smarter possessions and we have been doing that more consistently.”
Transfer guard Micah Parrish finished with 13 points and John Mobley added eight points. Ohio State trailed 41-32 at halftime despite being the home team against the Terrapins. The Buckeyes were able to turn the tide in the second half and move to 6-6 in the Big Ten.
Ohio State is currently projected to make the NCAA Tournament according to most projections. The Buckeyes travel to Nebraska on Sunday, then host Washington and Michigan next week back at home.
Diebler and the Buckeyes are on track to make the postseason in his first full season as the head coach. Ohio State has eight games left in the regular season before postseason play begins with the Big Ten Tournament.
