How much can a year change things, and how much can a coordinator change alter the history of a franchise. After a failed season with a combination of Sean Desai and Matt Patricia, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Vic Fangio to be their defensive coordinator, and results couldn't have been better.

After a strong regular season, especially down the stretch, the Eagles' defense was spectacular in Super Bowl LIX, holding the Kansas City Chiefs to 22 points—and they had zero through the third quarter, and the game was already all but over.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni made known how impressive Fangio was to build this new version of the defense.

"Vic has been a great coordinator for decades," Sirianni said "And he was awesome tonight."

The head coach talked about how impactful this win was, especially because the Eagles lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl two years ago.

"That's a great football team, we had to come out and play our best and we did," Sirianni added. "We have selfless guys that will fight for each other. It takes a lot of work to achieve it here."

First ring

While Vic Fangio has been a top coordinator in the NFL for a long time, and has been in the league since 1986, this is his first Super Bowl ring.

Fangio entered the league as a linebackers coach for the New Orleans Saints in 1986, and had his first chance as a defensive coordinator in 1995 for the expansion team Carolina Panthers.

Since then, he's been a DC for the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans (another expansion team), San Francisco 49ers, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins. He also worked as a lower-level assistant for the Baltimore Ravens. Between 2019 and 2021, Fangio had his first shot as a head coach, for the Denver Broncos.

Fangio was a consultant for the Eagles in 2022 and was expected to be hired as a DC in 2023, but Sirianni ended up choosing Desai, and Fangio went to Miami. A year later, both sides revisited the decision.

The outcome couldn't have been better for Philly.
