Ohio State decided to promote one of the biggest up-and-coming assistants in college football following Chip Kelly’s departure to the NFL.

Brian Hartline held the wide receivers coach/co-offensive coordinator role in 2204 and he is now the full-time play caller for the offense.

Hartline opened up about getting the job, something he has been working toward for some time. Ohio State made Hartline the OC in 2023, but Ryan Day still called the plays. The 2024 season will be a big test for Hartline and Day.

“Great honor,” Hartline said of getting the job, via Eleven Warriors. “Very humbled by it. I mean, Coach can select anybody in the country he wants to be the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, and he has trusted me for me to be one of those guys. So it means a lot.”

Day went out and got Kelly last time after getting Bill O’Brien to take the job. O’Brien left to be the head coach at Boston College and it worked out for the Buckeyes with Kelly. This time around, Day is going with an inside promotion.

Additionally, tight ends coach Keenan Bailey will now work closer with Hartline and the offense as a whole. Bailey was named as the co-offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes.

Hartline has been with Ohio State since 2017 when he joined as a quality control coach. Since 2018, Hartline has been the wide receivers coach and has developed a bunch of NFL talent in that time. Hartline has worked his way up the ladder at Ohio State, continuing to grow as a coach.

“If you're not growing every year, you're getting caught. So you're always trying to find ways to do better.”

Other programs around the country have tried to poach Hartline away from the Buckeyes. West Virginia interviewed Hartline for their head coaching job just a couple of months ago.

Now that he has the job, Hartline is taking the right approach and he is lucky to have this job. At the end of the day, he is calling the offense for a premier program like Ohio State, which could have gotten another premier name to call plays.
