Earlier this week, 247Sports made their game-by-game predictions for each Big 10 program and they have Ohio State finishing 11-1 in the regular season.
Not too bad for a defending national championship team that's losing its starting quarterback and both coordinators, right?
The downside to the prediction?
247Sports is predicting that Ohio State's one loss will come on the road against the Michigan Wolverines.
From 247Sports: A preseason pick to win the national championship within last season's Big Ten predictions came to fruition, but a fourth consecutive loss to Michigan was unforeseen. And despite going with the Buckeyes to once again be one of the country's best teams, next season's rivalry game is in Ann Arbor and the Wolverines seem to have a hex on this program under Ryan Day.
The pressure should be off of Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day in 2025, which is why I'm not sure I can agree with this prediction from 247Sports. I think we'll see Ohio State play free and easy against Michigan next fall.
Heading into the College Football Playoff in December, the feeling was that a loss in the first round to the Tennessee Vols would cost Day his job because of the loss the Wolverines a few weeks earlier.
Day, however, proceeded to lead Ohio State to arguably the greatest post-season run in the history of the sport as the Buckeyes stormed past Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and Notre Dame, winning each of those games by double-digits.
A loss to Michigan in 2025 would certainly be disappointing for Buckeyes fans. But after winning a national championship in 2024, there's no scenario where a loss to Michigan, even if it comes in a 7-5 season (which is not a scenario we expect to be in play), is going to cost Day his job — especially considering he had to replace both of his coordinators after Ohio State's championship run.
Day and the Buckeyes need to find a way to beat the Wolverines in 2025. And I ultimately think they will. But if they don't, Ohio State will gear up for another shot at Michigan in 2026. Day has built enough equity with the program that he can easily survive another loss to the Wolverines.
