Ohio State football predicted to land the kind of elite 5-star player that Ryan Day has shown to have strong success with
The Ohio State Buckeyes are expected to pick up a commitment from a 5-star quarterback that should start for Ryan Day early in Columbus.
The Ohio State Buckeyes may be on the verge of landing the top quarterback in the 2028 recruiting class.
St. John’s (MA) 5-star quarterback Christopher Vargas announced Monday that he will reveal his commitment on Aug. 8, and the Buckeyes appear to be the favorite to land the 6-foot-4, 175-pound signal-caller.
According to 247Sports composite rankings, Vargas is the No. 6 overall player in the class of 2028 and the No. 1 quarterback in the country. Vargas visited Columbus back in June, and Ohio State has had its eyes on him for quite some time. The Buckeyes have Vargas as their primary target at the position in the 2028 class and believe he could potentially be an early starter in Columbus.
Is more good QB news for Ohio State on the way?
Just a couple of weeks ago, Ohio State got major clarity at the quarterback position in the 2027 class when Brady Edmunds confirmed he would be staying committed to the Buckeyes and plans to sign this winter ahead of arriving on campus in the spring. Edmunds is an important part of the future at quarterback for Ohio State, and Vargas would add another significant piece to the puzzle.
Vargas’ potential commitment also signals why the Buckeyes may be passing on taking two quarterbacks in the 2027 class when it was originally thought they could. If Ohio State locks up Vargas on the 8th, the program would have its quarterback pipeline mapped out for years.
Christopher Vargas fits a familiar mold for Ryan Day
Ohio State coach Ryan Day has had success developing a similar mold of quarterback. C.J. Stroud comes to mind, and Vargas has some Stroud to his game. Day has also had success with other highly touted signal-callers like Justin Fields, and more recently Julian Sayin was a top 5-star talent at the position.
On Monday, On3’s Adam Gorney placed a prediction for Vargas to pick Ohio State on his commitment date. This would be a massive recruiting win for the Buckeyes and one they would want to build around in the 2028 class.
Ohio State already has 5-star wide receiver Jett Harrison, the brother of Marvin Harrison Jr., committed to playing in Columbus in a couple of years. The idea of Vargas throwing him the ball down the road is an exciting one for the Buckeyes’ future.
Have Aug. 8 circled on your calendar. It could be a big day for the future of the quarterback position at Ohio State.
