Even before Zack Martin informed the Dallas Cowboys his plans to retire, there were question marks about whether or not he'd wear the silver and navy again. This was due to multiple factors.

Firstly, Martin's season-ending ankle injury raised concerns about his future caliber of play. Additionally, his free agency status meant the Cowboys would need to reach a decision should he decide to return: To re-sign him or to opt for younger talent they could consider for their long-term vision of the team.

The latter was easier to visualize than expected in large part thanks to Brock Hoffman, who did a surprisingly good job filling in for Martin in 2024. Once he stepped in for the banged up veteran, the offense even improved.

Hoffman is currently in line to replace Martin, though that could change this offseason if the Cowboys add talent to the offensive line, perhaps with the 12th overall pick of the NFL Draft in Will Campbell (LSU) or Kelvin Banks (Texas). For now though, it's become clear he's the in-house favorite for the right guard spot.

That's why Hoffman's farewell message to Martin was the perfect one, as the once undrafted player thanked the former first-round pick for his teachings that made him a pro.

"Thank you for all you've done for me and showing me and everyone that has been a Dallas Cowboys OL what being a true pro is," Hoffman wrote as part of his goodbye post to Martin, which you can read in full below.

That's one of the best things about Martin. His dominance on the field was on display every week during his 11-year career. But what he did behind closed doors was always praised in the organization.
"I’m just going to do everything I can to honestly honor that position because being the right guard for the Dallas Cowboys—(Martin has) been the anchor of the O-line for over a decade now," Hoffman said last year upon Martin's season-ending injury. "So it’s just honoring that position, honoring that standard that he’s set in our O-line room."

"He brings so much to the team, to the team culture" former Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said at the same time last year. "We all recognize how great of a player he has been here in Dallas for his whole career but what he gives us as a person, people gravitate to him and he does a really good job of bringing people together, that offensive line room is really an illustration of his leadership, he'll definitely be missed in that area."
