From the moment the Dallas Cowboys' 2024 regular season ended to last Wednesday, everyone knew the team needed a wide receiver and badly.
But following the 2025 NFL Draft and their trade for George Pickens, what does the team's top needs look like? Though it's true the Pickens trade is a risky gamble, wide receiver is one we can probably remove now, as the Cowboys do have very viable WR3s on the roster.
Let's start with the most obvious Cowboys' need and end with one that could be fixed by reuniting with an old friend they recently met with.
1. Running back
This is the most obvious one of them all: The Cowboys have a couple of veteran running backs that haven't averaged over four yards per attempt since 2022, two Day 3 rookies, and Deuce Vaughn to work with. Is there upside? Sure. Is there a proven track record for Week 1? Nope.
This doesn't appear to be a position they're looking to add more to, though. Two free agent signings and two draft picks are likely all the resources the Cowboys will invest in the position. Now it's about seeing how early the rookies—the explosive but undersized Jaydon Blue and the powerful but not-so-fast Phil Mafah—can get on the field.
2. Defensive tackle (nose)
Though the Cowboys drafted NT Jay Toia in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, it would be unfair to expect him to compete with Mazi Smith this season. However, Smith shouldn't be an unquestioned starter going into the season. He hasn't proved anything yet.
Other than Toia, there's no competition for Smith. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cowboys add more defensive tackles around August just like they did last year.
3. Cornerback
Yes, the Cowboys picked Shavon Revel Jr. in the third round, which has been labeled as a steal by many analysts. But Revel Jr.'s question mark is all about his health. Not only is it about whether or not he'll be able to play Week 1 but how confident will he be on the field? Will he be his own self?
Without Trevon Diggs to start the year, the Cowboys' projected Week 1 cornerback lineup is DaRon Bland and Kaiir Elam on the outside, while Caelen Carson mans the slot.
That isn't exactly a No Fly Zone. I wonder if it's time to bring in Stephon Gilmore for a visit to The Star, this time a football one and not a business one like the one he had pre-draft.
