The New England Patriots are in a very prime spot heading into their final game of the regular season.
With the New York Giants defeating the Indianapolis Colts and the Patriots losing to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 17, New England now holds the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
And if they lose to the Buffalo Bills, that spot will be theirs.
So, Sean McDermott's announcement on Monday will make Patriots fans smile, helping them get exactly what they want.
Despite having clinched the No. 2 seed in the AFC, McDermott announced that quarterback Josh Allen will start to keep his streak alive.
"One of the things that we know is very, very important to [Allen] is his consecutive starts streak, if you will, and it's important to him for a great reason," the Bills head coach said. "He wants to be out there with his teammates and so he will be out there for a very, very short-lived amount of time and then he'll be off rather quickly there."
As for the rest of the team, some of the starters will play, while it will also be "some guys who we want to take a look at as well."
Allen has started in 104 consecutive games.
"I'm not surprised by it. The conversation we had, it was rather brief, but it was the first thing that he shared was that that was important to him," McDermott explained. "… He's been well decorated to this point and will continue to be well decorated as he moves forward and the honors he'll get and rightfully so. I think it's pretty cool when this type of stat, if you will, is one of the top things on his mind."
As for the Patriots, head coach Jerod Mayo did admit that the team is considering sitting Drake Maye in the final game.
"I would say right now, everything is in consideration, and we'll see how the week goes," he told reporters on Monday.
Maye has already suffered one concussion this season, and actually had to leave the Chargers game for a period of time after he took a hit to the head. While he did come back in, why risk the future of the franchise in a game that really doesn't matter?
And with that, they could give Joe Milton an opportunity, since the rookie quarterback hasn't had a chance to play since the preseason.
But regardless, the Bills playing their starters means a less likely chance for the Patriots to win. And with that, the No. 1 pick will be theirs.
