No Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, or Josaiah Stewart for Michigan against Alabama? No problem.
Despite missing their top three defensive linemen, two of whom are first-round picks and another top-100 pick, Michigan's defensive line wrecked the Crimson Tide Tuesday in the Reliaquest Bowl.
The Wolverines wracked up six tackles for loss and five sacks on Alabama. Quarterback Jalen Milroe had been sacked just 18 times the entire season. Michigan forced three fumbles, and their defensive line forced three fourth-down stops on Alabama.
Every time Milroe dropped back to pass, it felt like a Michigan defender was in his face almost instantly. Defensive end Derrick Moore led the way with two sacks and multiple pressures on the day.
I'll give credit to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and defensive line coach Lou Esposito here. The duo had Michigan's depth players ready to play today. No matter what Alabama threw at them, the Wolverines were ready up front.
Before the bowl game, I wrote about players who needed to step up against Alabama if Michigan wanted to win the game. Two of them were defensive linemen in defensive end Cameron Brandt and defensive tackle Trey Pierce. I'd say they passed the test with their game on Tuesday.
Michigan’s dominant defensive performance against top programs sends them into 2025 with momentum on their side
The future seems bright for Michigan’s defense.
Derrick Moore and TJ Guy announced their return to the team for the 2025 season, ensuring that their outside pass rush stays mostly intact. With Cameron Brandt boasting a strong bowl game performance, Michigan's defensive end room feels solid for another season after boasting multiple straight seasons of strong depth.
We'll see if Michigan tries to continue building their depth up front in the transfer portal, but the group they have currently should inspire plenty of confidence in the team for next season.
