The Oklahoma Sooners have already seen plenty of turnover from their 2024 roster and staff, with a new offensive and defensive coordinator in place ahead of the 2025 season and over 30 departures from the roster in the transfer portal.
They could see even more turnover, thanks to the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL coaching cycle.
The link for Murray is obvious. He was a productive rusher for the Cowboys in the early 2010s after being selected in the third round of the 2011 Draft Class. With how much Jerry Jones prefers former Cowboys players, it's not a difficult leap to see Murray being a coach of interest to him.
He also was hired by Lincoln Riley at Oklahoma, who Jerry Jones was interested in hiring to coach the Cowboys before hiring Mike McCarthy. The rumors around Murray's interest in the NFL have persisted for several years, but this is the most concrete evidence we've seen of it.
With Deion Sanders emerging as a candidate and his penchant for pulling high-level college coaches with him, Murray feels like a good candidate to link with Deion. On the other side, he never played with Kellen Moore, but the links with both of them being former Cowboys players are easy to see as well.
DeMarco Murray has had success coaching the Sooners' running backs. Since taking over in 2020, Murray has coached two 1,000-yard rushers in Kennedy Brooks and Eric Gray, while also coaching Rhamondre Stevenson to a fourth-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
He has also pulled in some quality recruits, landing the top back in the 2024 recruiting class in Taylor Tatum, as well as Xavier Robinson, Tory Blaylock, Jovantae Barnes, Gavin Sawchuk, and Tawee Walker.
However, some might look at this as a blessing in disguise. Some puzzling running back rotations and the lack of development in the last two seasons have soured some opinions on Murray. It's also entirely understandable many want to move past any Lincoln Riley hires and push out coaches who played a part in Oklahoma's disastrous 2024 offense.

The 2024 offseason brought plenty of changes to the Oklahoma Sooners' depth chart heading into next season. Over 30 players departed in the transfer portal, some starters, others not, and the Sooners brought in a decent haul of replacements to fill in the gaps and upgrade at a few spots. What does the team look […]
