The San Francisco 49ers have already made one big change since their season ended on Sunday, firing special teams coordinator Brian Schneider, and there will likely be more made to the coaching staff and plenty to the playing personnel over the coming months.

But it isn't known whether the 49ers are interested in changing anything upstairs in the front office.

They do, however, have the chance to reunite with a former member of that front office following a major piece of NFL news that came down on Tuesday.

The Tennessee Titans fired general manager Ran Carthon after two seasons, following a dismal 2024 that ended with them securing the No. 1 overall pick.

Despite their awful 3-14 record, the initial widespread reaction to Carthon's firing was one of bemusement, with most acknowledging he was not the problem in Tennessee.

For the 49ers, though, it is a move that gives them a potential chance to bring Carthon back.

Carthon spent six seasons with the 49ers, first as a director of pro personnel and then as a director of player personnel, and they received compensation in the form of draft capital for the Titans hiring him away.

Now he has been fired, the 49ers could look to reunite with a man who played a key role in team building process as the Niners rose to the ranks of the NFL elite under head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.

It may be too late in the process for the 49ers to bring Carthon in and allow him to influence their plans in this year's draft, in which they hold the 11th overall pick in the first round, given their scouting team will already have done a tremendous amount of work on this year's prospects.

But if there is mutual interest in a reunion, it could be something the Niners look at later in the offseason to bring in a familiar voice with a huge amount of scouting experience and an in-depth knowledge of the type of what the franchise looks for in its players.
