In what was arguably the biggest victory for Notre Dame football in over 30 years, the team was able to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday 23-10. This win helped to advance the Fighting Irish to the college football semifinals against the Penn State Nittany Lions. That means the program is just one win away from earning a spot in the national championship game.
It was very predictable, but many people out there have tried to downplay that victory for the Irish. The storyline around quarterback Gunner Stockton has been nauseating. A lot of fans have downplayed the SEC champions in order to discredit the win for Notre Dame. It’s been exhausting.
To make things even more agitating, there was a X post that went viral about an exchange between Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman director of analytics Anthony Treash during the fourth quarter of the matchup. It’s a part of Treash’s job to stay in constant contact with Coach Freeman, and assist with probabilities concerning decision making in high-pressure situations.
Yet, there was a claim of cheating. Even if the post was nothing more than an intended joke or attempt at engagement, it was poorly received. That’s especially true with the Michigan-Connor Stalions being fresh on the mind. To insinuate that this is something even remotely similar is irresponsible.
It was a strange hire when it was first announced, but Treash has proven to be a crucial fixture for this 2024 Notre Dame team. Treash was previously a graduate of Indiana University. He spent five seasons with PFF, and that included his most recent role as a College Football analyst.
Over the last several weeks, Coach Freeman has shown remarkable aggressiveness in big moments and hasn’t been afraid to utilize trick plays, and take perceived gambles on fourth downs. There’s a strong possibility that the increased elements of analytics have led to some of those. If utilizing those numbers and an additional opinion is cheating, then I guess the majority of college football are cheaters as well.
