On3 reported earlier this week that the Tennessee Vols were one of several programs showing interest in South Dakota State transfer running back Angel Johnson.
The Vols are losing running back Dylan Sampson to the 2025 NFL Draft. Additionally, running back Cam Seldon, a former four-star recruit, transferred from Tennessee to Virginia Tech recently. The Vols also lost Khalifa Keith to the transfer portal last month (Keith transferred to Appalachian State).
Peyton Lewis and DeSean Bishop will be the Vols' top returning running backs in 2025.
Johnson, who rushed for 646 yards and three touchdowns on 91 carries (7.1 yards per carry) last season, won't be joining Lewis and Bishop on Rocky Top.
According to ESPN's Max Olson, Johnson committed to Washington State on Saturday. He never made it to Knoxville for a visit.
It's unclear how interested Tennessee was in Johnson (a coach simply texting a player can be reported as "interest"). The report connecting the Vols to Johnson, however, seems to indicate that Tennessee is at least interested in adding a running back to the roster via the transfer portal.
If Tennessee doesn't find a transfer running back during the winter transfer period, they could try again in the spring. It's also worth noting that Tennessee signed three-star running back Daune Morris, a former USC commit, during the 2025 recruiting cycle. If the Vols don't add a running back via the portal, they could give Morris some reps as a true freshman next fall.
Important offseason decision just became a no brainer for Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel
Should be an easy call for Heupel
