Earlier this season, Mike Tomlin captured his 18th consecutive winning season.
One of the greatest regular season coaches of all time, Coach Tomlin is on a short list of best coaches to ever grace the NFL.
But for the Pittsburgh Steelers success is based on the season after the season. And with four straight losses and no playoff wins in nearly a decade heading into Saturday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, it seems other teams are wondering if Coach Tomlin is ready for a change of scenery:
Teams willing to call about trading for Mike Tomlin
“I think there are going to be teams out there that have watched the way that the Pittsburgh Steelers season has ended and wonder whether they should call the Steelers to see if they should inquire about whether the Steelers would be willing to move on from Mike Tomlin and move him to another organization," said NFL insider Adam Schefter on ESPN's Sunday NFL countdown.
"…I don’t think Pittsburgh will do that. That’s not what they’ve been about and there’s no indication that they would. But I do think there are teams wondering if they should lob in a call just to see if they could stir Pittsburgh’s interest.”
You probably have a better chance at winning the lottery and getting struck by lighting in the same day than seeing Art Rooney trade Mike Tomlin to another team. Not only did he just extend Coach Tomlin's contract a few months ago, but Mr. Rooney would probably fire Coach Tomlin before he traded him, and that's never going to happen.
Coach Tomlin has a lifelong contract in Pittsburgh. He will stop being the coach when he wants to be. That would likely mean retirement, as we know how passionate Coach T is about being the coach of the Steelers:
“Hey guys, I don’t have time for that speculation. I mean, that’s a joke to me. I got one of the best jobs in all of professional sport. Why would I have any interest in coaching college football," Coach Tomlin said in 2021 when asked about joining USC as their next HC. "And that will be the last time I will address it. Not only today, but moving forward. Never say never. But never. O.K.? There’s not a booster with a big enough blank check.”
And sure, maybe a change of scenery in the NFL is different, but Coach Tomlin and the Steelers seem content with their current situation, and that's all that really matters in the end.
