Justin Fields may be the backup QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but there was a time where he looked like the future of the franchise.
And following the four-game skid from the team and recent play of Russell Wilson, some are wondering if now is the time to re-insert Fields into the starting lineup.
That's especially true now that the trade terms between the Steelers and Bears are official:
Steelers to send 6th round pick to Bears for Justin Fields
When the Steelers acquired Fields for a mere 6th-round pick during last year's free-agent cycle, many were caught off guard. Fields' tenure with the Bears didn't result in a ton of wins, so when armed with the first overall pick, the Bears chose Caleb Williams to be the next face of their franchise.
That has yet to work for Chicago and the fourth-round pick they hoped for will remain a sixth-round pick given the fact that Russell Wilson was inserted into the lineup in Week 7 and is still the starting signal caller.
But for Fields, the six weeks he had under center were some of the best of his career. In the same offense that has looked lifeless over the last four games, he went 4-2 and put together a career day agsint the Indianapolis Colts, accounting for nearly 400 yards of offense and three total TDs.
Performances like that have many Steelers fans wondering if moving back to Fields isn't such a bad idea. Rusell Wilson was named starter because he was going to see the field, deliver to the right option and take care of the ball.
Yet in a month's worth of games, Wilson has been throwing interceptions, fumbling, and struggling to find open targets.
And when asked about the struggles, Wilson chose to ignore them and put his focus on the playoffs:
"I really…I don't really have a… I think what I want to say is…I don't really want to talk about the past just because I think, we've been in that," said Wilson after the Bengals game. "We've been in that for a little bit here. I think the best thing we can do is get ready for the playoffs. It's a new season. That's the only thing that really matters anymore at this point, right? The reality is, obviously us winning that game would have helped us in some form or fashion, but, at the end of the day, we got into the playoffs, everybody's got to beat everybody anyway, and that's got to be our focus right now."

Probably the best-case scenario.
