The Cleveland Browns have checked off one big box that they had to take care of this offseason.
A day after their season ended, the Browns opted to fire first-year OC Ken Dorsey from his role with the team. Now, the Browns land on an intriguing hire that does come with some risk.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Cleveland is promoting tight ends coach Tommy Rees to be the team’s next offensive coordinator. Rees is now one of the NFL’s youngest coordinators at the age of 32.
This marks the first OC job for Rees in the NFL, who will enter his second season with the team in 2025. Cleveland had interest in Klint Kubiak as well, but Rees beat him out for the job. It is expected that Kevin Stefanski will take back the offensive play-calling duties, so Rees would just have input on the offense at the end of the day.
Before arriving in Cleveland, Rees was the offensive coordinator at Alabama in 2023 and at Notre Dame from 2020-2022. Rees got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Northwestern in 2015 before taking an offensive assistant position with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2016. Rees played his college ball at Notre Dame from 2010-2013, then went back to be the quarterbacks coach in 2017.
The Browns’ offense was terrible in 2024, even historically bad at times. Cleveland scored just 15.2 points per game and only 322 yards per game. Both were numbers that just don’t give you a chance to win and the Browns were 3-14 as a result.
Cleveland has to go out and find their next quarterback this offseason. That is the single biggest task this team has. Deshaun Watson could be laid up all of 2025 with his Achilles injury and even if he wasn’t, he has proven he can not be the guy.
If this offensive coordinator hire doesn’t work out for Stefanski, it will surely be the last one that he gets to make in Cleveland. In the meantime, the Browns have marked off one order of business.
