The Skylar Thompson era with the Miami Dolphins has officially closed, which will probably cause a substantial portion of the Fins' fanbase to celebrate. And they can thank the Pittsburgh Steelers for that.
Pittsburgh signed Thompson on Tuesday, per Thompson's agency. The deal was a futures contract, per multiple outlets.
The Dolphins drafted Thompson out of Kansas State in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Thompson stuck around on the roster as the team's third quarterback his rookie season. After injuries struck Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater late in the season, Thompson drew the start against Buffalo in their Wild Card playoff matchup. Despite Miami competing and falling short 34-31, Thompson struggled overall, completing 18 of 45 attempts for 220 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions.
Thompson returned as a backup in 2023, but he didn't see any significant action thanks to Tua finally, for a rare change, remaining healthy for the entire season.
The Dolphins, after a dreadful preseason by Mike White and a lackluster one by Thompson, went with the latter as their QB2 in their initial 53-man roster back in August. However, after Tua suffered a scary concussion in a Week Two loss to Buffalo that put him on injured reserve, Thompson struggled mightily as their starter in the next game against Seattle, completing 13 of 19 attempts for 107 yards before leaving the game himself with an injury to his ribs.
The Dolphins would go on to sign Tyler Huntley and quickly elevate him to the starting role, who provided perhaps a slight bit more competent play under center in spot starts the remainder of the season when Tua missed time.
Now, with Thompson signing elsewhere, the Dolphins can finally look to sign a capable veteran backup quarterback who can move the offense when Tua is on the bench. Something they should have done long before now.
