Deion Sanders sets record straight on Titans having the 1st pick ahead of the NFL draft ‘positioning season’
Coach Prime opens up about what he thinks about the Titans
The Tennessee Titans have the 1st overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and that means two Colorado players are at the top of the watchlist for players they may draft.
CB/WR Travis Hunter is widely regarded as the most talented football player in this class, and is expected to go in the top 5. And while QB Shedeur Sanders is a divisive prospect, he’s a consensus top-2 QB on the board and definitely has a 1st overall ceiling.
But the question of Shedeur’s father and coach, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, is one that many have speculated on for some time. Much like the Manning family strong-armed the draft process with Eli back in the day, Deion is thought to potentially involve himself in the same way depending on who wants to draft Shedeur and Travis.
“Coach Prime” has gone on record already during this pre-draft process to explain his interests for the two players, saying he’s less interested in them playing for a big market and more interested in the infrastructure of the franchises they go to. In that same breath, he’s made it clear that he doesn’t want to get involved publicly, but will have the conversations necessary behind the scenes.
That was essentially the extent of our understanding on the situation up until this week, when Deion appeared on Barstool Sports’ “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast. He was asked point blank: “Tennessee has the first pick of the draft. How do you feel about that?”
His response? “I love it.”
Coach Sanders went on to explain all the obvious upsides about landing in Nashville.
“First of all, no state tax, new stadium going in, beautiful city. I love it. I really do.”
Then Deion explained what this time of year brings from the standpoint of the draft narrative. He understands the reality this early in the process: nobody knows much, and it’s a bit of a dance.
“I don't know what's going to transpire because right now it's positioning time. You're going to see an article coming out that I don't like Shedeur, I don't like Travis, I don't like Cam (Ward), just so they'll fall right where they want them to fall. So it's a lot of positioning going on, a strategic game going on right now.”
The last point Deion made is that his actual son Shedeur, as well as Travis Hunter and Miami QB prospect Cam Ward (who could also be the 1st overall pick) are all his sons in his eyes.
“But what I love is you got all three of those are like my boys, like they’re my babies, like even Cam, they have the same trainer. Darrell (Colbert Jr.) trains both of them. So if you’re hating on Shedeur, that means you got to uplift Cam. If you’re hating on Cam, that means you got to uplift Shedeur or you got to bring somebody else in the fold which you know better than that. So I love the way all this is transpiring because it's still going to be one of our kids. And we're going to do the draft in Boulder, Colorado, in the gymnasium with a packed house in front of all the students. So when they call their names, it's going to be pandemonium.”
If there was any concern from Titans faithful about Coach Prime meddling with Tennessee’s ability to land their favorite player, this interview all but puts it to rest.
