The Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt baseball rivalry is alive and well, particularly after the Vols hoisted their first-ever national title back in June after bulldozing through the SEC and then the playoff field.
Naturally, that's revved up some trash talk between fans on both sides, and a new quarrel popped up on Tuesday on Twitter/X when the popular video game MLB The Show revealed there would be a college aspect of the game featured.
The Barstool Vanderbilt account took a shot at Lindsey Nelson Stadium and – apparently – the Vols' penchant for hitting home runs there.
First of all, considering it's 320 down the lines, 360 in the alleys, and 390 to center field, no one is getting near the warning track in Lindsey Nelson Stadium at 250 feet.
However, former Tennessee first baseman Blake Burke dropped a bomb on the Commodore fan with a simple picture: a shot of a home run against the Commodores going way over the wall in center field in Tennessee's 6-4 win in the SEC tournament semifinal between the teams last year.
The shot actually was from former Vol Christian Moore, who's mammoth blast gave Tennessee a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning. That would prove to be enough for the Vols to knock off Vandy and avenge a tournament-opening 13-4 loss to the 'Dores.
As Tennessee showed across the season, both in Knoxville and outside of it, there was no shortage of power, with the ball flying over the fence in just about any park they visited.
Which makes the digs and implications that the Vols play in a bandbox that ups their stats nothing more than sour grapes. Particularly from a program not used to sharing the spotlight in their home state.
But there's no doubt it's a rivalry that's becoming one of the most intense and competitive in the country in recent years. And as social media has shown, it's one that will be fought both on the field and among the fans.
And even among the former players and fans, it seems.
