The Dallas Cowboys considered keeping Mike McCarthy, but both sides decided to part ways for contract reasons. The Cowboys' coaching search is now underway, and it can ultimately affect the Green Bay Packers, even though McCarthy left the team six years ago.
According to Dallas Cowboys reporter Joseph Hoyt, Packers assistant head coach and special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia is now a candidate to replace McCarthy as the Cowboys head coach.
“Dallas, per a source, has had some level of interest in Green Bay Packers special teams coach Rich Bisaccia,” Hoyt wrote. “He’s another person with familiarity with the franchise and the Jones family in particular. He was the Cowboys’ special teams coach from 2013-17.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones likes to invest in people he already knows—that's why Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and former Cowboys and current Philadelphia Eagles OC Kellen Moore are two of the main candidates. The details are that Bisaccia worked for the Cowboys for five seasons.
Nevertheless, the Cowboys are yet to request an interview with Bisaccia—if they do it, the Packers can’t deny the request, since it would be a promotion to head coach.
Track record
Rich Bisaccia has been with the Packers since 2022. In his first season, he was only a special teams coordinator. In 2023, the assistant head coach title was added.
Bisaccia has been in the NFL since 2002, with experience for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders.
He worked under Jason Garrett from 2013 to 2017 in the same role he has now for the Packers, assistant head coach and special teams coordinator.
The coach gained more respect around the league for what he did as an interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 after Jon Gruden's resignation. He led the Raiders to a 7-5 record and a playoff appearance.
Bisaccia interviewed for the Raiders full-time job in 2022, but Josh McDaniels ultimately was the choice—he has been fired since, and his replacement Antonio Pierce has as well.
Since the Packers hired Bisaccia, he was also interviewed twice for the Indianapolis Colts HC job in 2023.
Even though Rich Bisaccia is perceived as a big part of the Packers program because of his leadership, the performance of the special teams isn't what the franchise expected when it made him the highest-paid special teams coordinator in football—and that included multiple mistakes in the most recent playoff loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
