The Green Bay Packers retained head coach Matt LaFleur after a turbulent 2025 season, but the coaching staff underwent a sweeping transformation this offseason. With training camp opening Wednesday, the Packers enter the 2026 season with new coordinators, position coaches, and assistants at varying levels across defense, offense, and special teams.

LaFleur kept the foundation intact, but the ripple effects of key departures reshaped the staff in meaningful ways.

Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon leads the biggest change

The most significant move was replacing defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who left to become the Miami Dolphins’ head coach. Green Bay hired Jonathan Gannon as its new defensive coordinator. Gannon spent two years as the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive coordinator before coaching the Arizona Cardinals from 2023 through 2025.

With Gannon back in a coordinator role, the Packers expect to shift to a 3-4 base defense. More importantly, Gannon brings versatile coverage schemes and creative play design to the back end. That versatility is the primary reason LaFleur and the front office targeted him for the job.

The defensive staff saw additional turnover beyond Hafley. Linebackers coach Sean Duggan followed Hafley to Miami as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator, and defensive backs coach Ryan Downard also departed for the same organization.

Green Bay filled those gaps with experienced hires. Sam Siefkes takes over as linebackers coach after serving as Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator last season. Before that, Siefkes spent two years coaching linebackers for the Cardinals under Gannon, so the trust between the two is already established.

The Packers also hired Bobby Babich as the secondary coach and pass game coordinator. Babich served as the Buffalo Bills’ defensive coordinator over the past two seasons and was someone Green Bay interviewed for its own DC opening two years ago. LaFleur clearly liked what he saw in that process. Daniel Bullocks joins the staff as cornerbacks coach after holding the same title with the San Francisco 49ers, where he was also the pass game coordinator.

One internal promotion stands out. DeMarcus Covington, who coached the defensive line and served as run game coordinator last season, moves to outside linebackers coach while adding the titles of run game coordinator and assistant head coach of the defense. Covington, a former New England Patriots defensive coordinator, is someone the Packers trust deeply to anchor the defensive coaching infrastructure. Meanwhile, Vince Oghobaase earned a promotion from assistant defensive line coach to defensive line coach, a role that became necessary once the shift to a 3-4 base separated the interior defensive linemen and edge defenders into different position rooms.

Offense adjusts after losing quarterbacks coach to Eagles

The offensive staff remained mostly intact, but the Packers lost their quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion to Philadelphia, where he will serve as the Eagles’ play-calling offensive coordinator. Green Bay promoted Luke Getsy to quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach of the offense. Getsy held the quarterbacks coach title with the Packers from 2019 to 2021, then spent time as an offensive coordinator with the Bears and Raiders before returning to Green Bay as a defensive consultant in 2024 and a senior offensive assistant in 2025. His familiarity with quarterback Jordan Love and his strong relationship with LaFleur made the promotion a natural fit.

The other notable offensive change came at wide receivers coach. The Packers moved on from Ryan Mahaffey, who followed the departing coordinator to Philadelphia as the Eagles’ run game coordinator and tight ends coach. Noah Pauley replaces Mahaffey after spending the past two seasons as Iowa State’s pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach. Pauley is considered a rising coach in the profession.

Special teams coordinator Cam Achord replaces Rich Bisaccia

Rich Bisaccia, who served as special teams coordinator and assistant head coach, chose to leave the organization, and not many fans will complain about that after a few underwhelming years for the unit. The Packers replaced him with Cam Achord, who was the New England Patriots’ special teams coordinator from 2020 through 2023 and spent the past two seasons as the New York Giants’ assistant special teams coach. Achord won’t carry the assistant head coach title, but he brings proven experience to the role.

The volume of coaching staff changes is notable for a team that kept its head coach. LaFleur’s core offensive philosophy remains in place, but the defensive identity could look dramatically different under Gannon’s scheme. How quickly these new coaches build chemistry with a roster that expects to contend will be one of the defining storylines of training camp.
