The Green Bay Packers lost quarterbacks coach Shan Mannion this offseason when he left to become the Philadelphia Eagles’ play-calling offensive coordinator. To fill the void, the Packers promoted a familiar face with deep roots in the building: Luke Getsy, who returns to the quarterbacks coach role while also carrying the title of assistant head coach — offense under Matt LaFleur.

Getsy is in his third stint with Green Bay. Mike McCarthy initially hired him in 2014 as an offensive quality control coach, and he later became the wide receivers coach. After a year as Mississippi State’s offensive coordinator, Getsy returned in 2019 under LaFleur as quarterbacks coach (and was eventually elevated to passing game coordinator).

During that stretch, Aaron Rodgers won back-to-back MVP awards, and Jordan Love began his NFL development as the backup. Getsy then left for two seasons as the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator and a partial season with the Las Vegas Raiders before coming back to Green Bay as a defensive consultant in 2024, then as a senior offensive assistant in 2025.

What Rodgers said about Getsy

Rodgers spoke about Getsy when the coach was still with Chicago, and the praise offers a window into the type of relationship they built.

“A close friend and a guy who was a confidant,” Rodgers said. “We had a lot of long conversations.”

Rodgers also described the day-to-day dynamic in detail.

“He’s just a great human being. He’s a great father, a phenomenal coach, and he’s fun in the room,” Rodgers added. “He was younger than me, slightly different stages of life though, for sure, but I loved our constant dialogue during the weeks, and I loved being coached by him and just kind of watching his development.”

That willingness to engage in open dialogue is the quality that matters most for Love right now. The Packers quarterback enters his seventh NFL season and his fourth as a starter. He doesn’t need a coach focused on basic development, but someone comfortable with collaborative conversations about scheme and execution, someone who can push his game higher while also growing alongside him.

Building around a veteran quarterback

LaFleur praised Getsy when Green Bay brought him back in 2024 as a consultant.

“It’s good to have him back around. He’s known as the mayor around here,” LaFleur said. “He has a lot of longstanding relationships with a lot of people in the building. It’s just a positive guy to be around. It’s been good.”

The emphasis on relationships and institutional knowledge is the focus. Getsy understands LaFleur’s system, knows the building, and has already coached Love during his formative years. Love has already reached the status of a high-level quarterback. The goals now are comfort and elevation, pushing the ceiling higher through trust and schematic depth.

Green Bay’s offseason moves reinforce the direction. Adding veteran backup Tyrod Taylor gives the quarterback room another experienced voice for weekly preparation. Together with Getsy, the Packers are constructing an environment where Love is surrounded by people who can engage in real football conversations rather than simply teach fundamentals.

For the Packers, this hire is about building the right infrastructure around a franchise quarterback who is ready for the next stage of his career.
