Los Angeles Dodgers superstar outfielder/infielder Mookie Betts is only 5-foot-9, but don't let that fool you — he's one of the best athletes on the planet.
In addition to being a stud baseball player, the former AL MVP and eight-time All-Star is also an elite bowler and a more-than-capable basketball player.
Betts, who was committed to the Tennessee Vols to play baseball before getting drafted by the Boston Red Sox, joined the All The Smoke podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson this week and he described his basketball game.
The Nashville native also detailed playing pick-up basketball games with former Alabama Crimson Tide star Brandon Miller (who is also from Nashville).
Betts told Barnes and Jackson that he was more of a distributor on the court.
"I probably averaged, like, 14 points a game," said Betts. "I almost averaged a double double. So I really controlled the game. I'm not out there — I'm nowhere near a star, by no means. Like, I can control the offense. I'm not gonna lose it. I won't win it, but I will put it in the man's hands that will win it. I guarantee you that. So if you need it, I'll do all the dirty work and I got you."
"So I got hoop with Brandon Miller a couple times when he was in high school," continued Betts. "And then right before college, and like, that was right up my alley. All I gotta do is bring it up the court. Give it to me and I'll give it to him and I'll play defense. So really, I was just more athletic and better than everyone in my area. So that's where that came from."
Betts added that he can still dunk, despite being only 5-foot-9, though he noted that he only dunked once in high school.
The Dodgers might not be too happy to learn that one of their best players was playing pickup basketball with a future NBA player. The rest of us, however, would love to see the footage (if any exists) of Betts hooping with Miller.
