Winning a National Championship is the big goal that Ohio State had set out for this season and they accomplished that on Monday night with a win over Notre Dame.
The big victory marked the end of a number of careers in scarlet and grey. Some players will be heading to the NFL, while others are graduating or transferring.
One Buckeye has already found his next landing spot after Ohio State wrapped up their College Football Playoff run.
Mitchell Melton finds his transfer spot after five years at Ohio State
Mitchell Melton has had a tough go in his college career. Injuries have riddled Melton’s career and after five years in scarlet and grey, Melton is going to spend his final year of eligibility with the Virginia Cavaliers.
Ohio State recruited Melton as a four-star linebacker out of Maryland in the class of 2020. Melton spent a year at linebacker before missing the entire 2021 and 2022 seasons due to an injury. When Melton returned in 2023, he made the switch to becoming a pass rusher for the Buckeyes.
Melton played in 21 games during his five-year Ohio State career and 13 of those came this season. As a depth option off the edge, Melton recorded two sacks, 15 tackles, and seven tackles for a loss in 2024.
Playing time wasn’t there for Melton to move up the depth chart next season. Cade Curry and Kenyatta Jackson look like the starters, then transfer Logan George is expected to be a top-depth piece. Linebacker C.J. Hicks is a prime candidate to make the switch to becoming a full-time pass rusher next season.
Melton ended his Buckeye career in a special way after five seasons that brought plenty of adversity to fight though. Now, Melton will have a year to leave his mark at Virginia.
