Ohio State freshman running back Legend Bey has had an up-and-down start to his career with the Buckeyes. The latest update on the former four-star recruit sounds a lot better than what we had heard about him before, and it comes straight from Ohio State coach Ryan Day.

Bey has not had a smooth path through the first six games. Still, there are signs the freshman is starting to turn a corner at the midway point of the season.

Legend Bey’s freshman season has been a roller coaster

Bey started fall camp by being suspended for the first couple of practices. From there, he played in the season opener against Ball State and found the end zone for his only touchdown so far, and that score came through the air. Bey finished the game with two receptions for 37 yards and six carries for 37 yards.

The Ball State game wasn’t all positive for the freshman. Bey made a couple of mistakes by bringing a pair of kickoffs out of the end zone after he was told not to. After that, we didn’t see much of him on the field. Ohio State gave Bey one carry against Texas in Week 2 and one carry against Kent State in Week 3.

That changed in the Buckeyes’ sixth game against Maryland. Ohio State gave Bey four carries for 13 yards to go along with two kick returns, his most involvement since the opener.

Ryan Day sees Legend Bey heading in the right direction

It sounds like Bey is finally starting to find his footing. Day’s latest update on the freshman running back shares that same idea.

“He’s starting to take some steps in the right direction for sure, and he’s built a little momentum,” Day said. “So I’d like to have another good week with him.”

Another good week of practice could have Bey playing some against Indiana, even if it’s just as a kick returner. That would give him the ability to continue building trust with this coaching staff. It would also put the ball in his hands and give him a chance to make a play.

The 5-foot-10, 177-pound running back is still adjusting to a position switch after playing quarterback in high school. That transition takes time, especially at a program like Ohio State.

Bey isn’t going to be a heavy-workload player for the Buckeyes as a freshman. However, if he can become a player Ohio State uses situationally and then grow from there, that would be ideal for both sides.

Day doesn’t put comments like this out publicly for no reason. He never does. Now it’s up to Bey to keep heading in the right direction, and the week leading up to Indiana is going to be key in showing whether that momentum carries over.
