San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh looks set to make some additions to his staff as he aims to lead the unit to a bounce-back season in 2025.

The 49ers, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, are set to interview DeAngelo Hall for a defensive backs coach position.

Hall was the assistant defensive backs coach for the Carolina Panthers for the last two seasons. However, the two sides recently mutually parted ways.

San Francisco's interview with Hall, a three-time Pro Bowler in his playing career, would suggest slight changes to the structure of the 49ers' coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball.

What it could mean for the staff

Daniel Bullocks, who served as the safeties coach from 2019 to 2022, has worked in the capacity of defensive passing game specialist/defensive backs for each of the last two seasons.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows clarified that Hall interviewing does not mean the 49ers will part ways with Bullocks, with the team simply interested in adding more assistants to the secondary.

But if the 49ers do hire Hall or an alternative candidate as their defensive backs coach, then it will likely mean a new role or at least a slight alteration in title for Bullocks, who may simply be known as defensive passing game specialist going forward.

Hall worked mainly with the Panthers' cornerbacks during his time with Carolina, per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, so the 49ers could well be looking at a division of labor in terms of a new defensive backs coach working specifically with the corners and Bullocks working with the safeties.

Potentially great news for two key players

The impact Hall seemed to have on Carolina's Jaycee Horn makes him a very intriguing candidate to coach San Francisco's corners.

Former first-round pick Horn was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in 2024, recording a career-high 13 pass breakups and one interception. Per Sports Info Solutions, he ranked fifth among corners with at least 50 targets in positive play rate allowed (37.5%).

San Francisco already has one of the best young corners in the game in Deommodore Lenoir, who is still only 25 heading into his fifth season, while Renardo Green enjoyed an extremely promising rookie campaign after being picked in the second round last year. He will likely be a full-time starter in 2025.

With his experience as a player and his apparent success working with Horn, there's evidence to suggest Hall, should the Niners give him the job, could help elevate a strength of the team to greater heights if he can have the same kind of influence on their dynamic young cornerback duo.
