CBS Sports thinks Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer could be one of the next head coaches to join the most exclusive club in college sports.

Only three active college football head coaches have won national championships (Clemson's Dabo Swinney, Georgia's Kirby Smart, and Ohio State's Ryan Day).

CBS Sports listed DeBoer as one of the coaches they believe could be next to hoist a national championship trophy for the first time.

DeBoer, who replaced Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide's head coach ahead of the 2024 season, went 9-4 in his first season in Tuscaloosa.

From CBS Sports: The key for DeBoer will be whether he can continue the delicate balance of putting his imprint on Alabama football without losing what made Alabama football great under Nick Saban. Because before Saban, there was a decade of Alabama football with just one SEC championship (1999) and lots of middle-of-the-pack finishes in the SEC. It is not easy for the modern mind to consider a world where Alabama is not among the most important and successful football programs in the country, but it has existed. Luckily for DeBoer it was before most of today's players were born, so selling success on the recruiting trail might not be a problem. As long as DeBoer keeps the talent acquisition portion up to the standard set by his predecessor, he's got the coaching chops to help guide a deep playoff run.

DeBoer's first season wasn't up to the standard that was created at Alabama under Saban, but it was still a solid first year for the former Washington Huskies head coach.

Adjusting to life in the SEC can be tough, but DeBoer acquitted himself well, despite losses to Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.

CBS Sports' view of DeBoer, however, should give Alabama fans some confidence that he can get the Crimson Tide back to the top of college football.

Replacing Saban was never going to be easy. And the first year of the post-Saban era was always going to fall short of expectations. Now that DeBoer has his feet under him and he knows what to expect on a week-to-week basis in the SEC, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Crimson Tide become a regular fixture in the 12-team playoff.
